So I’ve been reading up on different Fraternities and Sororities in order to be as prepared as possible. Along the way, I have noticed something very interesting. Most of these organizations were established at a certain school and then proceeded to become national by establishing a beta chapter at another school where some founder or brother had some ties or they were asked to come in. In one way or another, the newer chapters were established by the currently existing structure.
My fraternity is different. Delta Upsilon, originally known as the social fraternity, was established at Williams College in 1834. This is the history as it is told to every brother during their educational process. But when you look at the next step, you see a change already.
Delta Upsilon was established in opposition to those secret societies that were utilizing evil practices (not all, but those currently existing at Williams utilized the organization as a way to maintain power over the college student leadership roles). So it is only fitting that they expand differently too. Rather than colonizing and chartering a chapter at a new school, The anti-secret confederation was formed by currently existing organizations with similar beliefs.
Williams is considered the place of the founding because the Social Fraternity was established before its counter-parts at other institutions, but it did not establish them as chapters of Delta Upsilon. Delta Upsilon did not become the official name of the fraternity until the 1864 convention.
So DU does it again…something different.
