I’ve been having some ups and downs as is natural with life. That being said, this morning and last night reminded me that I love what I do.
Let me explain: People will get you down, work will get you down, school will get you down. However, they can also get you right back up.
I hung out with a great group of friends and my girlfriend from school last night. We were together because of an assignment that was due. As is the case with grad school, we were stressed and annoyed both with the assignment and the professor. But as we were all getting down and stressed, we elected to go out to grab snacks. Between us and our cohort, we were making jokes and having a good time. We were laughing about the assignment and the day and more.
After that, I spent time with my girlfriend. I met this wonderful woman in my program. People say you can’t do that in grad school (the whole dating thing) but that is crazy. You can have the 3 S’s (study, sleep, and socialize) if you truly enjoy what you do and the people you do it with. You get to spend time with exciting folks doing work that everyone find annoying and love all at once because you are “nerds” on the topic. Sleep may be precious, but it is there (unless of course you are on call for housing, then who knows how many times you’ll see the clock hit 4am).
Then this morning I came in to work. One of the other Grad Assistants has created a “Sass Light” for us when we are sassy to her and I pushed her past the light and got a citation. We spent the morning discussing her ability to go ballistic on coffee and the laughter really brightened my day. Then there was a mass email that went to the entire university and shut down basically everything. We spent time laughing and enjoying ourselves.
My real point here is that there are times at work, school, and in life that you will be annoyed. A single phone interview or weekend visit will not always teach you which people you like and don’t like. Some things will really push your buttons and some people you simply will not like. But you will also find those glorious moments to revel in, those people to brighten your day, and even those assignments that genuinely make you happy. Take it all in stride. Take time for yourself and take time to get to know others. Have some fun. Grad School is a blast if you make it that.
