So, for those unaware in the FSL community, I would like to let you know about some upcoming events. One, which you should know about for this coming Monday (March 3rd, 2014) is NPC’s International Badge Day. It is a great event to have this week. Starting tomorrow (March 2nd, 2014 through the 8th) is what is known as National Ritual Celebration Week (NRCW). Check out a few of these sites such as Phi Mu or or Zeta Tau Alpha if you would like more details on what the week is about.
With that in mind, I want to talk about ritual. There are things associated with rituals such as words and actions, ribbons and pictures. There are people involved and it can be incredibly emotional or solemn. There are a lot of elements that make each and every fraternity or sorority’s ritual different, and each and everyone has meaning. I am personally honored to be a member of a nonsecret fraternity…my mother and sister attended my own ritual. I attended that ritual and took an oath where I swore to uphold certain standards for myself and for my brothers. Beyond that, one of my brothers, Britt Taylor, began a practice where we would look back at this oath each semester as brothers. We would discuss what it meant, which words stood out to us, and why these words still mattered.
As we embark upon the journey of this week (NRCW), I want to send a call to all my FSL brothers and sisters. We stated these words and took our oaths, we participated in rituals as a representation of our commitment to our brothers and sister. How many of us have ever looked back at those words, let alone can quote them. How many of us know the promises we have made, that we stood before people, whether public or private, and claimed were important to us. These words that should matter to us always and be seen in our everyday lives…
Do we live our ritual or is it a book hidden in the corner?
