I Feel Stupid…

So I was reading this article about a guy trying to use hazing to get out of homework

First, the idea made me sick. Really? That seems acceptable?

Then I made the very depressing decision to keep reading. The article goes on to call out the professor and RAs for turning in people for being honest. See, here is the thing. I think that college and universities should be willing to support students. If you have studied student development at all, however, you also know that the other essential piece is to challenge them as well. Therefore, individuals such as this should take a moment and understand the responsibility that comes with their actions. In this and the authors case of BREAKING THE LAW (in several states, hazing is against the law, underage drinking is against the law, and drinking/being drunk on campus is against school policy) why is it the responsibility of the professor, RA, staff member, or otherwise to continually cover up when you make a mistake. These folks take the hit time and again to support these students through their stupidity. Then as soon as the student is expected to be held accountable for their actions, the world is simply unfair.

That of course leads into the comments on this particular post, which I should have known better than to read as they only served to help my blood pressure skyrocket. Let me start by clarifying that a fraternity is not for everyone, nor is every fraternity run and operated like the frat described in the story. Check out some of my other posts if you would like more information on that idea or of buying your friends. However often times people generalize fraternity to the portrayal of frats in movies (Animal House, Old School, Neighbors) or on a few experiences from their own university. That is an issue that fraternities and sororities have been dealing with for years and a central theme to idea such as “You Are Always Wearing Your Letters.” Often times the good deeds done by fraternities are outshone by the bad deeds, such as SAE being the “deadliest Fraternity in the US.” All of this led me to feel exactly how David Stollman does in his following Tweet.

The point of this piece is a number of things I have said time and again. Yet these things continue to happen. To be fair, I wonder at times if the best move is to remove fraternities and sororities from campus…stories like this don’t serve to improve my opinion…

  1. You’re not the first to wonder “What the hell. Are these organizations even worth it.” I promise. I ask myself that all the time. You find yourself shaking your head wondering how something with so much potential for good can be steered so poorly by some dumb weasels we continue to recruit.
