The Tragedy

I write this as a cautionary tale to all those interested in Student Affairs. The life you find here will be wonderful and amazing. You will meet students who will change the world. You will struggle beside folks that finally get it. You yourself will be affected by the people who come in and out of you life.

But know that not all experiences are fun or easy. You will not always have the right words. At times you will feel at a loss, floundering around yourself as others grab on to you for support. These opportunities you will plan for and hope they never come, but they will still catch you off guard.

I write all of this currently in the throes of my own chaos. I want to offer this one simple bit of advice. You may not know the words. You may not know what to do. But you are a human being. Just be there.

People will struggle. You will struggle. Staff, Students, and the community will struggle. It will all be complicated. So…

Just be there.
