The phrases we use…

There are certain phrases we use in the English language. These phrases are nice. They sound sweet and make things easy for us. They simplify life. They allow us to live our lives.

There are certain phrases we use in the English Language. These phrases are rude. They dismiss free thoughts and trap us. They alleviate our responsibility. they allow us to ruin lives.

The sad thing is when these words are one in the same. Today I want to discuss a few of those statements with you and challenge you to never use them again. I have used them myself. They can be very useful. But they can also cause chaos.

We’ve always done things this way. Stop right there. I am glad for you. Tradition can be a useful thing. It can be beneficial to connect you to your roots. As a fraternity man, I am honored to take the same oath that my brothers before me took. Our principles and history bind us together across generations. This phrase becomes dangerous when we use it to defend our actions. If this is the only reason you can give for doing something, then perhaps it is time to question why and how you do it. It is time to put those critical thinking skills that we consider so important to use.

Everyone else is doing it. Another lovely phrase. This is a great idea in certain situations and we use it ourselves. “Didn’t you see what everyone else was doing? How are you the only one who did not manage to get this done?” However it also gets dangerous. For example, if you are doing something as a fraternity just because every other fraternity out there is doing it, why aren’t you just doing it with them? You stand on these claims to be different, prove it. Don’t say that and then just follow the trend. Change the system, don’t accept it.

It doesn’t affect me. This phrase has been the bane of my existence. We use it as an excuse. You know if you use this phrase that the topic is a problem, but you care not to acknowledge the problem’s reach. This statement is an excuse for you to continue your ways which are often times detrimental. If you don’t think it affects you then come and chat with me. Let’s lay out the real issues.

I challenge each and every one of you to strike these statements from your vocabulary right now. If there is a real purpose behind your actions then you can survive without them. If there isn’t…well then…
